Established in 1965, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is an autonomous institution within the UN system with a mission to develop capacities to enhance global decision-making and to support country-level and regional-level actions for shaping a better future. Following its mandate of “enhancing the effectiveness of the United Nations in achieving the major objectives of the Organization”, UNITAR has contributed to developing the capacities of Member States in the fields of economic and social development, diplomacy, and peace and security. Currently, UNITAR provides training to approximately 41,000 participants per year in some 500 different training activities and uses both face-to-face and distance-learning methodologies.

 

UNITAR’s Multilateral Diplomacy Programme (MDP) activities for diplomats, government officials, international civil servants, and private sector entities cover a wide range of policy domains, including bilateral and multilateral negotiation, multilateral conference diplomacy, economic diplomacy, Inter-Ministerial Coordination, public diplomacy and other related topics, as well as capacities and skills development activities such as negotiation skills and public speaking, amongst many others.

The overall objective of the five-day training programme is to provide officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with a general appraisal of Canadian foreign policy, an analysis of the various mechanisms of decision-making relevant to the conduct of Canadian foreign policy, as well as an understanding of the role of Canada within the international system.

At the end of the five-day training course, participants will be able to:

  • Applytechniques to communicate effectively with Canadian counterparts;
  • Discuss major topics of Canadian foreign policy and foreign policy direction;
  • Analyse the role of Canada in international politics.

The proposed training course will comprise of training and briefing sessions, over a period of five days. The participants will be presented with an overview of Canadian foreign policy, its general direction, as well as techniques for effective communication with Canadian counterparts.

UNITAR trainings are designed to be highly interactive and participatory, including exercises and tools to enable the participants to acquire a thorough understanding of the related process dynamics and substantive issues at work, in addition to the transfer of skills and techniques to enable them to function effectively and efficiently. The training course will focus on the transfer of knowledge through interaction with experts and representatives from Canada and the United Nations system.

The training courses and the workshops will be designed for diplomats and officials representing the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be responsible for selecting participants, taking into account the relevance of the training subject matter for the duties of the beneficiaries.

The courses and the workshops will be conducted in the English language. Fluency in English is a requirement for course participation.
