The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) started their collaboration in 2005. In recent years, UNITAR has organized numerous successful training events for Saudi Arabian diplomats, providing them with a unique learning environment and enhancing their knowledge and skills in diplomacy and international affairs. Previous training programmes aimed to develop diplomats’ capacities in the field of multilateral diplomacy, international law and refine their skills for international negotiations through practice-oriented, interactive, professional training courses. This training programme for 2017 aims to build upon the experiences and lessons learned from previous years and further build cooperation.

The overall goal of the proposed training activities is to strengthen the capacities of Saudi Arabian diplomats in the abovementioned fields of multilateral diplomacy. At the end of the course, participants should be able to discuss the structure and functioning of the different courts and tribunals and analyze the functioning of the arbitral tribunals, litigation and dispute settlements systems and mechanisms.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the structure and functioning of the different courts and tribunals;
  • Identify the differences among the existing international courts and tribunals;
  • Analyze the functioning of the arbitral tribunals as well as the dispute settlements systems and mechanisms.

Representatives of international tribunals and courtsbased in The Hague will provide participants with an overview of the structure, mandate and processes of their entity. The programme includes time for Q&A sessions and discussions.

UNITAR trainings are designed to be highly interactive and participatory, and will include a variety of pedagogical tools to enable the participants to acquire a thorough knowledge and understanding of the substantive issues at work, in addition to the transfer of skills and techniques to enable them to function effectively and efficiently in their professional roles. This worshop will include visits to the different organizations and briefings by its representatives.
The course will focus on the transfer of knowledge through interaction with experts and representatives of different national and international organisations.

The training courses and the workshops will be designed for diplomats and officials representing the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be responsible for selecting participants, taking into account  the relevance of the training subject matter for the duties of the beneficiaries.

The courses and the workshops will be conducted in the English language. Fluency in English is a requirement for course participation.
