Orientation Briefing on Geneva’s Multilateral Working Environment
In order to perform efficiently in Geneva’s multilateral working environment, it is crucial for diplomats to have a sound knowledge of the structure and functioning of the UN System and its various Geneva-based components. Over the years, the mandate, governance and decision-making of the UN agencies, funds and specialized agencies based in Geneva have evolved considerably and diplomats are increasingly called upon to cover the work of various organisations with diverse decision-making mechanisms.
After this briefing participants should be able to:
- Define the mandate and functions of some of the major international organisations in Geneva;
- Analyse linkages between the international organisations in Geneva;
- Perform more efficiently in Geneva’s multilateral working environment.
Representatives of international organisations and agencies based in Geneva will provide participants with an overview of the mandate and governance of their entity. The programme includes time for Q&A sessions and discussions. Participants will also be familiarised with privileges and immunities applicable to diplomats accredited to the United Nations Office at Geneva (this presentation will be held in French).
This briefing targets members of Permanent Missions accredited to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international or regional organisations, funds and programmes. UNITAR reserves the right to make a selection among candidates.
The briefing will take place from 09:00-12:30 and from 13:30-17:00 on 30 September & 01 October 2014, at the Palais des Nations. The briefing will be conducted in English; only the session on privileges and immunities applicable to diplomats accredited to the United Nations Office at Geneva will be conducted in French.
