Orientation Briefing on Vienna's Multilateral Working Environment (2017)
In order to perform efficiently in Vienna’s multilateral working environment, it is crucial for diplomats to have a sound knowledge of the structure and functioning of the UN System and its various Vienna-based components. Over the years, the mandate, governance and decision-making of the UN agencies, funds and specialized agencies based in Vienna have evolved considerably and diplomats are increasingly called upon to cover the work of various organizations with diverse decision-making mechanisms.
This briefing will provide participants with a concise overview of the United Nations System at Vienna and strengthen their understanding of the structure, mandate and governance of the main Vienna-based organizations.
After this briefing participants should be able to:
- Define the structure, mandate and functions of the major international organisations in Vienna;
- Analyse linkages between the international organizations in Vienna;
- Perform more efficiently in Vienna’s multilateral working environment.
Representatives of international organizations and agencies based in Vienna will provide participants with an overview of the structure, mandate and governance of their entity. The programme includes time for Q&A sessions and discussions. Participants will also be familiarized with privileges and immunities applicable to diplomats accredited to the United Nations Office at Vienna.
This workshop is open to members of Permanent Missions and delegates of Ministries of Foreign Affairs and other government officials as well as to representatives of international, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.
The briefing will take place on March 6 and 7 at the Vienna International Center. The course will be conducted in English.
