In the lead-up to COP26 and building on previous workshops on climate change with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Republic of Kenya, and the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, UNITAR’s Division for Multilateral Diplomacy has designed a unique workshop on Climate Change Diplomacy, to equip officials from the Republic of Seychelles to represent their national interests more effectively at international fora. COP26 and the various forums around it will require a combination of substantive knowledge of UNFCCC processes, climate science, and negotiation skills. This workshop is designed to be relevant to both environmental specialists and diplomats, and will focus on how they can apply their technical and first-hand experience of the climate emergency within the context of high-level discussions. In doing so, UNITAR aims to build on its proven track record of successful trainings for governments and foreign ministries in preparing for technical and scientific discussions.

At the end of the e-Workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe climate change science and the observed and projected impacts of climate change;
  • Track and explain the international climate change policy framework, including the climate change negotiations to date under the UNFCCC;
  • Appraise the key issues in the ongoing international climate change negotiations, and how to build and move forward from COP25 and prepare for COP26;
  • Claim and create value in international climate negotiations;
  • Develop positions and interests in negotiations.

The UNITAR e-Workshop on Climate Change Diplomacy will be held over 4 half-days, on Zoom. Each day will feature 4 hours of training, for a total of 16 hours. The first three days will focus on climate change, the background of environmental diplomacy, the framework of the UNFCCC and the key issues at COP26. The final day will be dedicated to a simulation exercise designed to prepare participants for the debates and dynamics at COP26.

UNITAR training programmes are designed to be highly interactive and participatory and will include – whenever possible – a variety of simulation exercises, case studies and pedagogical tools to enable participants to acquire a thorough knowledge and understanding of substantive topics, as well as a practical appreciation of negotiation processes and dynamics. Illustrations and case studies will be shared with participants so that they can strengthen their understanding of the topics.

The e-Workshop will be designed for up to 25 participants selected by the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office for Mauritius and Seychelles. All components of the training programme will be conducted in the English language.
