The personal data of participants applying for, registering for or participating in UNITAR's training courses and other events is governed by the Data Protection and Privacy Policy. By applying for, registering for or participating in this event, the participant acknowledges that he or she is, (or they are) aware of the policy and agree to its terms.

To achieve sustainable development, national actors in Africa need to incorporate sustainable consumption and production (SCP) into national policies and planning. With the goal of scaling up learning on SCP in the region, UN Environment and UNITAR are partnering, under the SWITCH Africa Green Programme, to deliver the second edition of this interactive e-learning course, especially tailored to the regional context of Africa.

Participants will learn what is SCP, what are the benefits from SCP to African countries, as well as what are some of the regional, national and sector-specific challenges and opportunities to implementing policies for SCP in the context of the 2030 Development Agenda. This e-learning course will equip participants with the basic skills for applying the SCP concept in a real world economic, policy and professional context.

The course is offered both in English and French.

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

Define the concept of SCP and explain its value in the context of the 2030 Development Agenda
Distinguish key elements of effective policy planning in support of SCP
Discuss challenges and opportunities for advancing SCP in specific sectors and thematic areas
Identify a range of global and regional initiatives that promote SCP
Apply SCP to a real-life policy-making context.
Understand compliance with the 2015 Paris Agreement and the 2063 Africa Agenda.

The course pedagogy is adapted to professionals in full-time work. Participants are provided with the opportunity to learn through various experiences: absorb (read); do (activity); interact (socialize); and reflect (relate to one’s own reality).

The total number of learning hours is 32 over 8-weeks period (4 hours per week), including study time (2 h/week) and participation in online course activities (2 h/week).

During weeks 1-5 the main learning materials are complemented by a range of learning activities and experiences that include interactive exercises, discussion forums, and an applied case study. Weeks 6-8 are reserved for wrap-up and completing course assignments.

The course is geared towards high- to mid-level civil servants from Africa, directly involved in the process of developing, implementing and evaluating policies supporting the transition towards SCP. The target group includes:
— Representatives from academia and research institutes
— Other individuals engaged in the social, economic and policy transition towards SCP

With support from the EU SWITCH Africa Green Programme and the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP), 40 fellowships are available for both courses (in English and in French), for participants from Africa working in the academia or NGOs.

UNITAR, working in close collaboration with UN Environment, will identify and select the participants to be awarded a fellowship.

Participation fee for non-eligible candidates is 600 USD.
Those who participated in the 1st edition do not qualify.
