While the Charter of the United Nations has often been regarded as the constitution of the Organization, resolutions adopted by its principal organs may be considered its laws. Hence, the need for accuracy, respect of the correct terminology and search for the proper expression is given. Over the years, the United Nations resolutions have acquired a distinctive style. Furthermore, the rules relating to the adoption of resolutions have been supplemented by a number of practices. This workshop aims at providing thorough training on all these topics.  

The main objectives of this workshop are to familiarize the participants with the structure and form of United Nations resolutions and decisions, to help them to improve their skills in the drafting of resolutions and to enable them to acquire a better knowledge of the rules and practices relating to the adoption of resolutions.
 
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
 
· Describe the structure and form of United Nations resolutions and decisions;
· Identify draft resolutions rules and proceadures;
· Identify the rules and practices relating to the adoption of resolutions.

The workshop will consist of three parts: the structure and drafting of resolutions and decisions; the decision making and adoption of resolutions; and, the drafting of a resolution, through a simulation exercise. 

 A large part of the workshop is devoted to practical drafting exercises. In view of the limited duration of the workshop, active involvement of participants is required throughout the workshop.

This workshop is open to Members of permanent missions accredited to United Nations Headquarters and other government officials; representatives of international, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.

 

The workshop instructor is, Dr. Yassin El-Ayouty is a member of several bars including New Jersey, the Bar of the US Supreme Court, the Egyptian Bar and the Bar of the Egyptian Court of Cassation (the Supreme Court of Egypt), and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

The workshop will be held at United Nations Headquarters in the North Long Building, Room E, on Monday, 30 June 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Important: Upon completion of online registration, applicants other than least developed countries and other developing countries will receive an automated invoice, which will allow them to make full payment for their UNITAR workshop. UNITAR reserves the right to rescind an applicant's enrolment at any time in case of non-receipt of payment. All participants who successfully complete the workshop will receive a UNITAR Certificate of Completion.
