3 August 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – Women and youth in 24 countries in Africa are invited to apply to the UNITAR programme Developing Essential Digital Skills for Women and Youth in Africa: Enhancing Employment Opportunities and Livelihood Development in the Digital Economy. Over six months, participants will build high-demand digital skills to increase employment and income-generating potential to develop socially responsible digital start-ups and improve leadership and entrepreneurial skills to drive change and innovation in their communities. The deadline for applications is 4 September 2023.

3 August 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – Women and youth in Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe are invited to apply to the UNITAR programme Developing Green Livelihoods for Women and Youth in Africa: Strengthening Food Security, Supporting Climate-Resilient Economies. Over six months, participants will learn entrepreneurial and digital skills so they can develop climate-resilient businesses and create inclusive, environmentally responsible and viable employment and livelihood opportunities. The deadline for applications is 4 September 2023.

2 August 2023, Hiroshima, Japan - Women living in or from the Pacific Island countries and territories are invited to apply to the UNITAR Women’s Leadership in Tsunami-based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) for World Tsunami Awareness Day 2023. Women tend to have a higher vulnerability to disaster risks and building their capacity will reduce these risks. People from Asia and men are also welcome to apply. The programme aims to equip participants with lifelong skills to develop inclusive disaster risk reduction plans that match the needs of their communities and country. The programme will pay particular attention to gender-specific capacities and vulnerabilities in communities. The deadline to apply is 1 September.

28 July 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – On 6 August 2023, UNITAR will hold a public youth pitch event “‘Peace & xx’ Ideation – Nuclear Disarmament and Sustainable Futures”. Around 60 youth from Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Tokyo will pitch their ideas to realize nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation for a sustainable future.

28 July, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR will hold an exhibit featuring its Hiroshima Training Programme on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation from 31 July to 11 August 2023 in Vienna. The exhibit will be held in parallel with the first session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), organized by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs.

21 July 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) held ceremonies in Tokyo and Hiroshima to celebrate its 60th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the UNITAR Hiroshima Office. The ceremony in Tokyo was held at the United Nations University on 29 June, while the ceremony in Hiroshima was held at Mielparque Hiroshima Hotel on 30 June.

21 July 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – On DATE, UNITAR Hiroshima Office celebrated the publication of The UNITAR Hiroshima Fellowship for Afghanistan: An Anthology with a book launch and roundtable event. The event was part of the Hiroshima Office’s 20th-anniversary celebrations.

14 July 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR welcomes the reappointment of renowned Japanese athlete Mr Dai Tamesue as UNITAR Goodwill Ambassador, effective 1 July 2023. This marks the third year of Mr Tamesue’s partnership with UNITAR. The reappointment was announced during the UNITAR anniversary celebration in Hiroshima on 30 June 2023.
