About UNITAR and the Planning, Performance and Results Section
 
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) develops capacities to enhance global decision-making and to support country level action for shaping a better future. The scope of the Institute’s work is global with over 25,000 individuals benefitting from the delivery of over 400 training and related events annually in all parts of the world and in areas as diverse as peace, security and multilateral diplomacy; post conflict peacebuilding and reconstruction; public finance, trade and decentralized cooperation; human mobility and migration; youth entrepreneurship; climate change, chemicals and waste management and environmental governance; and disaster risk reduction.
 
The Planning, Performance and Results Section (PPRS) is located under the Office of the Executive Director and provides leadership in the areas of strategic planning, performance management and corporate reporting. Among its various planning, results-based management, evaluation and reporting functions, the section leads the Institute’s internal quality assurance process and monitors the implementation of recommendations, documents good practices and promotes organizational learning and programming improvement through lessons-learned and the sharing of good practices.  
 
Key tasks
 
The intern/trainee will focus primarily on the following key tasks:
 
  • Maintain a database of recommendations stemming from evaluations and quality assessment reviews and monitor their implementation;
  • Develop tools and processes to capture and disseminate information and sharing lessons learned for organizational learning and quality improvement;
  • Review and improve filing systems and develop on online repository of evaluations;
  • Improve and maintain the repository of the Institute’s Quality Assurance Committee;
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual corporate reports on performance and results; and
  • Perform other tasks as requested related to planning, performance and reporting.
Requirements:
  • First level university degree (preferably in area of communications, information management and/or a related field with knowledge of results-based management, quality assurance and/or evaluation);
  • Fluency in English (good working knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable);
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills, with a strong attention to details in all tasks;
  • Performing level knowledge/skills of Microsoft applications, including Excel; and
  • Commitment for four to six months.
Note: If applying for an internship:
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a post-graduate educational programme.
 
What the intern/trainee will gain from this assignment:
  • Knowledge of and practical experience in evaluation, performance management and quality assurance processes, including extracting lessons to be learned for quality improvement;
  • Awareness of/exposure to the work, performance management and reporting processes of a large United Nations training organization;
  • Involvement in the improvement and development of the section’s website and repository.
Reports to: Manager, PPRS
 
Place of work: Geneva, Switzerland
 
Timetable: The intern/trainee will start to work as soon as possible.
 
Remarks:
In accordance with relevant UN and UNITAR regulations and policies internships/traineeships are non-remunerated. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibilities of interns/trainees. A small stipend will be provided for local transportation, however.
