Observation through satellite images from Oct 2019 to Jan 2020 reveals gradually worsening vegetation conditions. This may lead to agricultural drought situation.
The agricultural area in southern LMB suffered from prolonged dry spells during December 2019 to January 2020 and refers to severe to extreme drought conditions.
The months October to March coincides with Rice Growing Season in the LMB. Extended dry spells in these months likely to impact the yield.
Preliminary observations, impact and severity :
Evidences of drought detected in the Southern LMB during last December 2019 to January 2020.
The occurrent dry spell likely to impact the yield in this region, particularly Cambodia and Vietnam.
This is an initial assessment based on the available tools and resources; however a detailed quantitative assessment needs to be done to confirm the exact nature of drought occurring in the region be it meteorological, hydrological or agricultural drought.
