Master of Advanced Studies in European and International Governance
In an increasingly globalized world where the European Union faces many challenges, the importance of multilateral dialogues and cooperation has become ever growing, and the United Nations remains a central forum for progressing ideas as well as an important platform for action. In fact, seventy years after the creation of the United Nations and twenty-five years after the end of the Cold War, conflicts have evolved in their form and the type of actors involved are linked to new challenges such as energy, finance, pandemics, environmental disasters, and armed conflicts.
For this reason, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is pleased to announce the launch of its Master Programme of Advanced Studies in cooperation with the University of Geneva, the Center for European Legal Studies (CEJE) and the Global Studies Institute (GSI) to take place in January 2017 in Geneva, Switzerland. The Master Programme of Advanced Studies in European and International Governance aims to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of commitments made at the international level in order to tackle greatest global challenges of the 21st century.
The Master offers a unique intellectual anchor for the work of the international institutions as well as a mechanism through which to channel current thinking and research into policy-making in a city which is at the heart of multilateral diplomacy: International Geneva. Geneva is also the busiest conference center in the world, gathering more international civil servants than New York, making it a perfect location to foster a condensed Master on the complex challenges the international community as well as the European Union are facing.
For one year only, the Master of Advanced Studies in European and International Governance will provide students with a wide and condensed coverage of thematic courses such as human rights and migration, maintenance and promotion of international peace and security, international trade, and health and environment. The programme offers research and professional perspectives, including internships, study visits, as well as an on-hand thematic specialisation through achievement of a professional project or writing of a Master’s thesis.
The programme prepares participants for a wide range of careers in international organisations and European institutions as well as for careers in a national or local environment dealing with global issues by offering internship opportunities in large and international organisations. The short duration of the programme as well as its practical aspect, provide an excellent and enriching experience for learners and professionals who wish to enhance their skills and knowledge within a limited timeframe.
According to Professor Christine Kaddous at the University of Geneva, the Master provides many advantages including: “the high-level interdisciplinary expertise of the University of Geneva, the cooperation with UNITAR and the privileged location in Geneva with close contact with the international organizations. The programme responds to the professional needs of persons wishing to take over executive functions in national or international careers dealing with global issues.”
For the upcoming year, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research and the University of Geneva look forward to welcoming new participants.
