28 October – 02 November 2018, Kathmandu, Nepal – Mandated by the Nepalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNITAR’s Division for Multilateral Diplomacy delivered a five-day workshop on Conference Diplomacy, Multilateral Negotiations and Human Rights. The workshop brought together 32 Nepalese officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Department of Passports; the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies; the Police; the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs; and the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.

In continuity with the workshop on Negotiation Skills & Techniques organised in March 2018, the goal of this workshop was to build participants’ capacities in the fields of Conference Diplomacy and Multilateral Negotiation, Effective Writing in Multilateral Diplomacy and International Human Rights Protection and Promotion.

To do so, participants engaged in taught lessons and simulation exercises. The two UNITAR facilitators, Mr. Lars Tillfors and Mr. Youssef Hamdan, ensured the successful completion of the workshop. They presented a variety of topics including United Nations meeting, rules of procedure, negotiation tactics, diplomatic reporting, key human rights concepts, the human rights normative framework.

Participants reported having substantially enhanced their knowledge and skills during the workshop, and particularly throughout the simulation exercises. Overall, they greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the United Nations system, multilateral diplomacy, and international human rights protection and promotion. Attendants have said that they would most likely benefit from what they learned in their professional career, notably regarding effective writing.
