Mr. Evariste Karambizi was appointed as the first Manager of the UNITAR Peacekeeping Training Programme (PTP) in March 2009. Mr. Karambizi has over 16 years of extensive national and international experience in humanitarian relief and reconstruction operations in conflict and post-conflict areas, 10 years of which were within the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations (UN DPKO) field operations: Head of Regional Office, United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN); Return, Reintegration and Recovery Planning Officer, United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS); Sector Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordination – Relief, Recovery and Reconstruction, United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL); Field Officer/Acting Area Coordinator, Relief, Recovery and Reconstruction United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA); Regional Projects Officer, United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK). Mr. Evariste Karambizi, a Rwandan national, was born in Burundi and has an academic background as an Economist & Regional Planner. He holds a Lizentiaten der Regionalplanung from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, a Licencein Rural Economics and Candidat Économiste from the Faculté des Sciences Economiques et Administratives, University of Burundi.

Claudia Croci is Associate Programme Officer within the Peacekeeping Training Programme, UNITAR. Since she has joined the Institute in 2008, she has supported the consolidation of the Programme’s training curriculum, through the diversification of courses’ topics, languages and delivery modes. Under the guidance of the Programme’s Manager, she has also been actively involved in the implementation of the Programme’s resources mobilization strategy and in strengthening the Programme’s overall visibility and outreach, through the organization of and participation in high-level meetings and events. Prior to joining UNITAR, Ms. Croci has worked with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs – Policy Development and Studies Branch – and the International Training Centre for Conflict Management, developing and implementing training courses for internal and external audiences in the field of peace and security. Besides the United Nations, Ms. Croci has collaborated with several intergovernmental and regional organizations, most notably the African Union, OSCE and NATO. Parallel to her professional career, Ms. Croci has been active in the field of academic research through the involvement in different research projects in the area of conflict and post-conflict studies. Ms. Croci holds a Ph.D. in Human Rights, Politics and Sustainability and an MA in Human Rights and Conflict Management from the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies.

Ludwig Gelot joined the Peacekeeping Training Programme in 2011 and is a subject matter expert working on the design and delivery of online and face-to-face courses. He has facilitated trainings on conflict analysis and conflict management in Asia and Africa, including for UNAMA and UNMISS personnel. A former senior lecturer at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, Dr Gelot is the Chair of the Steering Committee established to oversee and support the delivery of the International Master’s degree in Conflictology offered jointly by UNITAR and the Open University of Catalonia. Dr Gelot is also involved in the Programme's resource mobilisation efforts through the development of funding proposals to be submitted to donors.

Emma Sajben has joined the Programme in January 2012 as a training consultant. Her main responsibility is to coordinate the quality assurance of e-learning activities and to develop e-learning courses. She also has been active in delivering training of trainers courses face-to-face to African peacekeeping training institutes. Before joining the Programme, she has gained experience in knowledge management and instructional design while working with the Knowledge Systems Innovation Unit of UNITAR. Previously, she has been active in the field of teaching, training and education policy in Hungary, Sweden and the USA working with local, regional and national organizations. Ms. Sajben is a Hungarian national and holds a double-degree in American Studies and German Philology and Culture from University of Szeged, Hungary. She also studied Education Policy with a scholarship at Trinity College, Hartford, USA.

Svenja Vollmer joined UNITAR’s PTP in October 2012 as DAAD collaborator. She holds a Master’s degree in Peace Research and International Politics from the University of Tübingen and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Communications from the University of Dresden. Prior to working with UNITAR, she was part of the project “Promoting Civilian Capacities for Peace Operations” (civcap) of the German Center for International Peace Operations (ZIF). Ms Vollmer has international experiences in human rights work and peace education in Europe and South America. At PTP she is involved in the review, development, and facilitation of e-learning courses. She is responsible for the build up of a community of practice and currently she is designing a course on “Child Soldiers and Security Forces”. As a member of the Steering Committee, she is furthermore assisting in launching the new Master’s degree in Conflictology.

Alina Soltani Neshan joined the Peacekeeping Training Programme as an intern in April 2013.She is currently studying in the International Double MA programme “Peace and Conflict Studies” at University of Marburg in Germany and University of Kent in Canterbury, England. She hold a BA in “European Studies and International Relations” with specialization in EU Foreign and Security Policy and has been studying in Germany, Russia and Spain. Prior to working with UNITAR, Alina interned with the German Embassy in Paris. Moreover, she has been involved in various development and peace projects in the Balkan States and has further international experience in development work in South India. At PTP she is developing training courses in Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping and EMDR trauma therapy. Her tasks also include organizing a high level event on innovative trauma therapy for conflict and post-conflict areas where she has been the focal point at UNITAR.

Cosimo Vallo joined the UNITAR PTP team as Trainee on June 2013 after the completion of an M. Phil. in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation at the Trinity College Dublin cross-border school in Belfast during which he researched the implementation of the Traditional Justice Systems within the processes of reconciliation. He was awarded also a Master’s Degree in International Relations at the LUISS Guido Carli of Rome after the submission of a dissertation in which he studied the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions. Previously, he worked in Rome for the Italian Jurist Union for the Protection of Human Rights and in Brussels for the NGO No Peace Without Justice.

Franz Thiel joined the Peacekeeping Training Programme in August 2013, after gaining experience in instructional design and course administration as a trainee at the Knowledge Systems Innovation Unit of UNITAR. He has been involved in the buildup of an online community of practice, contributes to the graphical development of new e-learning courses and assists with the administration of training activities. Franz studied Ethnology, Sociology and Spanish at the University of Leipzig. He loves working for a good cause, and gained experience in the development field with non-profits in Germany and Bangladesh. His previous professional experiences also include working as a freelance web designer and as an IT service agent at IBM.

Morgane Desoutter joined the Peacekeeping Training Programme as an intern in January 2014 after being awarded a French-German Master degree in International and European Governance at the University of Münster (Germany) and at the Institut d’Etude Politique of Lille (France). She conducted a comparative study on the Vietnam and Irak wars and their cultural representation as part of her master’s thesis. Having previously interned in an NGO sustaining the education of women around the world, she gained experience in the field of Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding, focusing namely on education and gender related issues. In her free time she cultivates her passion and her skills for arts. She is very passionate about graphic novels and “bande dessinnée reportage”, a combination of comic-book and (war) reporting. She drives her inspiration from famous illustrators such as Joe Sacco, Robert Crumb, Gipi or Etienne Davodeau. She will bring her input to the content of the PTP courses as well as provide illustrations and diverse art works.

Mara Frigo joined the UNITAR PTP team as trainee in October 2013. She worked for a private Italian company which operates in the field of cooperation for sustainable development. She was also an external expert of the M&E Unit of the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science at the LUSPIO of Rome, were she wrote her dissertation in International Law looking into the role of the Human Rights in the Constitution of Bosnia-Herzegovina. She pursued a master’s degree in International Relations at the LUSPIO of Rome, with a thesis on the Process of Independence of the State of Georgia (former USSR). She attended several courses focused on Diplomacy, with SIOI in Rome, and on Geo-politics, also developed by SIOI of Rome in collaboration with LIMES. Mara co-facilitates and administers e-Learning courses at UNITAR. She is also developing and implementing a social media marketing strategy for PTP.

Andrea Pereira joined the UNITAR PTP team as a Trainee in November 2013. She was recently awarded her MSc in International Security at the University Of Bristol UK, where she wrote her dissertation in Environmental Security. She also holds a BA in International Relations and Economics from Simmons College in Boston, where she also focused on issues regarding global security, looking at the dynamics of peacekeeping/peacebuilding missions to terrorism. Her interests currently lay with the women empowerment, gender issues and peacebuilding. She has previously interned with a NGO which dealt with orphaned children in Haiti after the earthquake, and was also an assistant to an Ambassador to the UN.

Maren Steller joined the UNITAR PTP team as a Trainee in March 2014. She was recently awarded her BA in Political Science at the Eberhard Karls University of Tuebingen in Germany, where she focused on topics relating to peacebuilding, peace education in conflict regions and transitional justice with a special focus on the “localization” of transitional justice mechanism. Previously she completed an internship at the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Centre for War and Peace Studies at Liverpool Hope University and she also worked as a student assistant at the Peace Education branch of the Berghof Foundation.

Ivy Sempele has joined the UNITAR Peacekeeping Training Programme in June 2014 to provide support in researching and compiling data and tools related to fundraising. She was recently awarded her BBA in International Business and Economics at the City University of New York. Previously, she worked as a volunteer with UNICEF where she developed a user-friendly digital platform for UNICEF programmes and strategies in different outcome areas and with World Health Organization (WHO) where she maintained a database on international transactions on HIV treatment. She has also worked with a private company compiling a donor database to support women empowerment, equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Ivy is passionate about social causes on women, youth and children.

Cassie Yao joined PTP as a trainee in June 2014 from the University of Canterbury. Cassie is Chinese and lived in New Zealand for the past 12 years. Her background is in social science and she will be supporting the marketing of the Master Degree in Conflictology in the Asian region as well as Programme’s external communication.

Benjamin Gaches has joined UNITAR PTP in June 2014. He recently obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Political Sciences and Development Studies from McGill University in Montreal. He focused his course load on conflict analysis and resolution. Benjamin has been teaching, tutoring and mentoring for the past five years, with students from primary school to college level. His specialization in interpersonal conflict resolution and community reconciliation, combined with his studies, have given him a particular interest for capacity development in war stricken areas. Benjamin will assist with instructional design and e-learning integration.

Guilherme Lacerda-Silva had worked with Shelter Centre before joining UNITAR. There he was part of the team to develop the Shelter and Settlement Training funded by USAID. In addition, Guilherme worked to restructure and to update the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) shelter handbook. Before coming to Geneva Guilherme had lived in London where he had volunteered to Oxfam and worked with London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. Guilherme holds a MSc degree in Management from Brunel University and BA in Business and Management from Glamorgan University.

Mollie Cretsinger has joined the Programme to provide support for the development of courses concentrating in Peace and Conflict, and Peace Operations. She recently finished her Masters in Droit international des droits de l'Homme at the Institut des droits de l'Homme in Lyon, France, and was previously awarded her BA in Foreign Affairs and French at the University of Virginia. She has worked extensively in American Politics, in Washington DC lobbying on a range of technology and international trade issues, and has also experience as a foreign language teacher in French primary schools in Montpellier, France. Her main interests include women and human rights, transitional justice and conflict analysis.

Hannah Mulligan joined the Peacekeeping Training Programme as a trainee in June 2014 after studying a Masters degree in Technical Communication and e-Learning at the University of Limerick, Ireland. She is currently completing her thesis investigating the potential of m-Learning in developing countries. Hannah also holds a BA in Modern Irish and Philosophy from Trinity College, Dublin. She has previously worked for the European Commission, facilitating workshops and producing short films for various youth initiatives. In her spare time she enjoys horse riding, poetry and reading.

Marie-Christine Schwager joined UNITAR PTP as a Trainee in June 2014. She holds a Master’s degree in Peace- and Conflict Studies from the University of Marburg and a Bachelor’s degree in Society Studies and History from the University of Basel. Her research interests lie within the areas of human security, gender in conflicts and conflict resolution. She has previously interned with the GIZ, focusing on the African Peace and Security Architecture as well as with ACCORD, supporting the Training Unit in the area of mediation. Marie will assist the PTP in developing and reviewing e-learning courses concerning Gender and Peacebuilding and support the facilitation of an e-learning course about Peace Operations. She looks forward making a meaningful contribution to the work UNITAR does in Training.
