ENHANCING WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP AND MENTORING CAPACITIES

Over the past decade or two, increasing efforts have been directed to promote gender equality and empowerment of women in all sectors of society, including women’s participation in leadership and decision-making positions. To contribute to this common objective, the International Organisation of Employers (IOE) and UNITAR organized a series of three e-workshops on gender, women’s leadership and mentoring in November and December 2020.

UNITAR’S SUPPORT TO FEMWISE AFRICA ADVANCING WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP IN MEDIATION AND NEGOTIATION

Did you know that when women participate in peace processes, the resulting agreement is 35% more likely to last 15 years? But did you also know that between 1992 and 2019, women represented only 13% of negotiators, 3% of mediators, and 4% of signatories in major peace processes? To combat the disconnect between these statistics, UNITAR has co-developed with FemWise-Africa the Custodians for Peace project which empowers women with the skills and confidence to directly participate in peace processes.

FUTURE FOR WOMEN IN AFGHANISTAN: SELF-LEARNING TO STEP FORWARD

Afghanistan was at the bottom of the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap 2021 rankings, which came out five months before the political transition in August 2021. Since then, segregation between women and men has become stricter, not only at educational institutions but in jobs, the political arena, and even in households. Combined with serious economic deterioration, poverty, and worsening security, many women suffer from violations of their human rights to safety and freedom. Hosna also worries that early marriage for girls is increasing.

BREAKING GENDERED BUSINESS BARRIERS AND CHANGING COMMUNITIES WITH ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN KENYA

Maureen Nduta was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. Having lived in the city all her life, she wanted a fresh experience and moved to Mombasa in the coastal region. Her plans were all set: first get a small restaurant running, then start a small farm to supply produce for the restaurant, and later on enrol for a business degree. Everything seemed to be going to plan. Then COVID-19 happened.

TAKING THE WOMEN, PEACE AND SECURITY AGENDA FORWARD

UNITAR has joined forces with The Office of the Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on Women, Peace and Security (OSE) through the secondment of a Gender Monitoring Specialist. With the gracious support of the US government through USAID, beginning in June 2021 the Specialist has been leading the OSE’s support to Member States, Regional Economic Communities, and civil society actors to accelerate the delivery of the WPS Agenda, ensuring states are accountable and committed to the WPS Agenda and that the role and leadership of women in peace processes is strengthened on the African continent.

PREMIER LEAGUE CHANGEMAKERS: BREAKING THE BIAS IN SPORT, LEADERSHIP AND GENDER EQUALITY

As part of an ongoing commitment to achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls, UNITAR has partnered with the Premier League, Premier League Charitable Foundation and Sport Relief to create ‘Changemakers,’ a leadership and empowerment programme for self-identifying young women and girls aged 11 - 18. Changemakers aims to empower, inspire and develop personal skills and positive attitudes for leadership by using the power of football, sports and movement.

EMPOWERING WOMEN FOR CLIMATE ACTION

Women and girls are and continue to be, disproportionately affected by the negative impacts of climate change. For instance, women from marginalized communities make up a large percentage of poor communities worldwide that rely on natural resources for their livelihoods, particularly in rural areas. The effect of climate change such as, heatwaves, droughts, floods, and hurricanes disproportionately affect women and, as the climate crisis intensifies, women will struggle the most.

INNOVATIVE CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECTS FOR GENDER-DISAGGREGATED DATA

Crowd4SDG is a research project promoting citizen science initiatives with a focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Citizen science is a significant resource as it can both produce social innovation to achieve the SDGs and provide non-traditional data to track the progress made towards them. The project is steered by a consortium of partners with UNITAR responsible for enhancing policy relevance and usability of the citizen science data.

BUILDING CAPACITIES IN THE AREA OF GENDER, WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP AND MENTORING

The achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women is essential towards building strong and resilient economies and societies. The Multilateral Diplomacy Programme at UNITAR held a series of online workshops on gender, women’s leadership and mentoring to enhance gender equality and women’s empowerment. This impact story reveals how participants have applied the knowledge and skills towards building gender-sensitive organizational cultures, enhancing their leadership approaches and building the capacity of their colleagues in gender equality.

This impact story reveals the effect of UNITAR and the Rule of Law and Anti-corruption Centre (ROLACC) e-learning course “Anticorruption and Sustainable Development” on participant’s work life. Three female participants’ stories showcase how the course informed their work in policymaking and planning processes, their use of the anti-corruption knowledge and skills to undertake public investigations, and how they have linked anti-corruption strategies to sustainable development.

This 4-modules course will cover the basic concepts of the sustainable finance field and walk through the instruments, methodologies and frameworks for integrating sustainability into financial decisions, key global sustainable finance initiatives, and regulations. Given the current global context, UNITAR specifically designed a series of training programmes to strengthen multilateralism. UN SDG:LEARN BLOGS - NEW SERIES ON SMEs AND SDGs

The UN SDG:Learn is launching the Second Series of the UNSDGLearn Blog, "Small and Mediums Enterprises (SMEs) and the Implementation of the SDGs". This Series will shine a light on SMEs, their realities and the challenges they face as well as their philosophies, level of involvement and opportunities in regards to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

PARTNERSHIPS

UNITAR WELCOMES THE SUSTAINABLE CYCLES (SCYCLE) PROGRAMME

After 27 years under the United Nations University (UNU) and following the signed Memorandum of Understanding between UNITAR and UNU, the former UNU programme has successfully completed its transition to UNITAR as of 31 December 2021. Presently, the SCYCLE team has been integrated within UNITAR’s Division for Planet, located at the UNITAR Office in Bonn, Germany.

NEW EXECUTIVE MASTER DEVELOPED WITH LUISS

Following the request of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and thanks to their generous support, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Luiss School of Government partnered to develop the unique Executive Master in Global Public Diplomacy and Sustainable Development designed to admit up to 30 highly skilled African diplomats.

UNITAR AND AGFUND SIGNED AN AGREEMENT TO ESTABLISH A GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP HUB

AGFUND and UNITAR recently signed a new agreement for establishing the Global Partnership Hub. It aims to enhance education and innovation for SDGs and support Financial Inclusion for low-income countries. UNITAR’s Executive Director, Nikhil Seth and Director of Division for Prosperity, Mihoko Kumamoto joined the signing ceremony in Saudi Arabia.

NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH UNIDIR FOR TRAINING IN EMERGING TECH

The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) announce a new partnership to jointly design and develop a range of innovative training programmes.
