UNITAR crafts stories for evaluation

UNITAR has reached over 50,000 people every year for the past three years. More and more people continue to benefit from the Institute’s programming through face-to-face trainings, e-learning courses, master’s degrees, conferences and more. 2018 was another record year, with nearly 84,901 beneficiaries reached, of which 72 per cent were learning-related beneficiaries.

UNITAR training combines knowledge of international experts and regional practitioners in pursuit of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation 

The programme’s 19 participants, including 10 women, hailed from the ministries of defense and foreign affairs of Bangladesh, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Timor-Leste. Out of the 10 nations represented, eight have signed the recent Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), and five are members of the Central and Southeast Asia nuclear-weapons-free zones.

How UNOSAT rapid mapping service contributed to humanitarian response to natural disasters in 2018

The UNOSAT Rapid Mapping Service has been supporting the humanitarian community with satellite imagery analysis for over 16 years. The service was established in 2003 to meet the demand of United Nations agencies, Member States and other humanitarian agencies for rapid mapping and satellite derived analysis in the wake of disasters and complex emergencies.

Last year, UNOSAT assessed 28 humanitarian crises resulting from natural disasters in 22 countries* across Asia-Pacific, Africa and Latin America upon request from sister UN agencies, governments and humanitarian organisations.

UNITAR Offsets its Greenhouse gas Emissions

According to the UNFCCC Secretariat, ‘offsetting is a climate action that enables individuals and organizations to compensate for the emissions they cannot avoid, by supporting worthy projects that reduce emissions somewhere else’. To limit its environmental impact UNITAR, which hosts the Secretariat of UN CC:Learn, has offset its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the year 2017 through the United Nations Carbon Offset Platform.

Recently partnered and signed an agreement with University of Colorado Boulder Leeds School of Business to develop a new three-part e-learning learning certificate programme on “Leading with Ethics in Achieving the SDGs” for the summer and fall semester.
