4 August 2021, Hiroshima, Japan – "Detonating nuclear weapons will have disastrous consequences, affecting all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from health to environmental degradation." This was the central message from Nikhil Seth, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNITAR, at the UN High-Level Political Forum Special Event on “Nuclear Disarmament and Our Sustainable Future.” The event was organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), with partners Hiroshima Prefecture and the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe).

As part of the AGFUND and UNITAR Global Learning Platform on Financial Inclusion initiative, two e-workshops were organized to enhance the capacities of professionals in the areas of financial inclusion and sustainable development. The e-workshops "Financial inclusion and sustainable development" and "Training of Trainers for financial inclusion" were delivered in November and December 2020, over four weeks each. The e-workshops targeted professionals working in microfinance or financial institutions from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

26 July 2021, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR Division for Prosperity is seeking motivated learners interested in developing an inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Plan matched to the needs of their communities and countries. Open to all women aged 18 years or over, the three-month online training will build participants’ knowledge on in DRR. Topics will include the Sendai Framework, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), gender responsive DRR, multi-stakeholder coalitions in DRR, community-based DRR, and climate change.

26 July 2021, Hiroshima, Japan – The UNITAR Hiroshima Nuclear Disarmament and Non-proliferation Training Programme has since 2015 been running in Hiroshima. Designed for officials from Asian nations, the training aims to increase the officials’ understanding of the nuclear disarmament debate, give insights into their communication practices to improve their ability to negotiate for disarmament, and familiarize them with the structure and practice of negotiations on disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. The March 2021 course focused especially on preparing trainees for the upcoming Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons scheduled for August 2021.

16 July 2021, Hiroshima, Japan – Dai Tamesue, two-time World Championships bronze medallist in the 400m hurdles, was appointed UNITAR Goodwill Ambassador in July 2021. “I am committed to training Asian athletes and fostering friendship among them, so I resonate with UNITAR’s activities. I look forward to promoting its missions,” said Mr. Tamesue at the online press conference held on 14 July 2021.
