The University for Peace (UPEACE) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) have partnered to offer a portfolio of Master’s Programmes and Certificate Programmes in the areas of diplomacy, development, and international law. 

All UPEACE-UNITAR Programmes combine the academic strength of UPEACE with the world-class executive-style training of UNITAR. Taught by UN staff, diplomats, practitioners, and academics, all programmes offer insight into the UN and the opportunity to experience it first-hand, and are highly focused on post-graduate career development.

The Pura Vida Fellowship Programme is open to applicants to UPEACE-UNITAR programmes who are nationals from LDCs and SIDS. Please check the LDC and SIDS lists to confirm eligibility and email admissions@upeace.org for more details.

The Master of Arts in Gender and Development

The Master of Arts in Gender and Development (hybrid format) aims to equip students with critical knowledge about gender studies in its intersections with development studies, focusing on a variety of topics, including but not limited to, women’s empowerment, queering development, gender in its intersections with environment and development, the interplay of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disability, among other factors with development work. In addition, it prepares them with the required skills for a successful international career in a variety of fields - diplomacy, development, politics, social work, human resources, human rights, teaching, research, policy institutes/think tanks, and others.

The Master of Arts in Development Studies and Diplomacy

The Master of Arts in Development Studies and Diplomacy (online and hybrid formats) is an interdisciplinary and holistic programme that will not only broaden students' knowledge in the field of development studies and diplomacy, but will also equip them with the required soft skills for a successful international career in any of these areas of expertise. During the programme, students will analyse the different dimensions of development, including environmental, social, economic, and human dimensions - as well as the theory and practice of diplomacy in the 21st century.

The Master of Arts in International Law and Diplomacy

The Master of Arts in International Law and Diplomacy (online and hybrid formats) is a graduate programme permitting students to specialize in the interface between international law and diplomacy. It will not only broaden students' knowledge in the field of international law and its various foundational dimensions, but will also equip them with the knowledge and skills required to work in the field of diplomacy and related international careers.

The Master of Arts in International Law and the Settlement of Disputes

The Master of Arts in International Law and the Settlement of Disputes (on-campus, online, and hybrid formats) offers students an understanding of the role that international law and institutions play in the settlement of international and transnational disputes. As international and transnational adjudication has acquired a more prominent role in international relations, the programme will provide participants with a deep understanding of how global and regional courts are responding to the challenges of the 21st Century, thus preparing them for successful careers in international, national, and local government, or civil society agencies and organizations.
