This workshop aims at improving participants’ analytical and interpersonal skills in their continual negotiations to ensure they do first things first. It is important to prepare before action, especially when strong coalitions and consensus are needed, and to improve the quality of relationships, internally through the mandate, and externally with the representatives of other partner states, before any other action. Negotiating the process and agenda is needed before dealing with problems and issues. In other words, participants will become more aware of how they behave in negotiation contexts, and whether or not they should behave the same way, or differently.

After this course the participant should be able to:

  • Analyse how diplomatic negotiations are conducted;
  • Use a preparation grid for better negotiation planning;
  • Identify tensions, differences and conflicts in international contexts;
  • Describe how to facilitate the peaceful resolution of conflicts;
  • Perform more efficiently as a negotiator.

Session 1: Negotiation Strategy

Case: International Decision Making (multilateral preparation and external interactions)

Key Negotiation Dimensions

Session 2: Preparation of the Mandate and Negotiation Process

Case: Towards a Complex Agreement (bilateral negotiation)

Key Assets for Preparation

Session 3: Conflict Resolution

Case: Managing an Ethnic Conflict (negotiation in delegation)

Key Negotiation Steps

Session 4: Complex Negotiations

Case: Putting it all together

Key Principles: What to do first and second in negotiation

The course will use four pedagogical tools: concept learning (lectures and presentations), role-playing (group exercises), experience sharing (roundtable discussions) and exposure to real world problems and policy choices delegates are confronted with.

This workshop targets members of Permanent Missions accredited to the United Nations Office at Vienna and other international or regional organisations, funds and programmes. UNITAR reserves the right to make a selection among candidates.

The workshop will be conducted in English.

UNITAR is delighted to announce that thanks to the generous support of Austria this workshop can be offered free of charge.

Participants who have followed the course in its entirety will be awarded a course certificate.
