8 October 2018, Buenos Aires, Argentina- The International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Argentina (CIFAL Argentina) hosted a conference at the Argentine Parliament on the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the key role of Parliaments to advance legislation in support of the SDGs.

The impact of SDGs to enhance economic development and to improve people’s lives were some of the topics addressed during the conference. In the same vein, the essential role of national parliaments through their enactment of legislation, adoption of budgets, and their role in ensuring accountability for the effective implementation of the SDGs was discussed during the conference.

Congressman, Mr. Hernan Berisso, recognized the importance of including the 17 SDGs with the 169 targets in the national agenda. Eradicating hunger, securing healthy lives and quality education for all, as well as implementing urgent actions to prevent and mitigate effects of global climate change are at the core of the 2030 Agenda and Nations are encouraged to implement them.

Mr. Walter Kirby, president of CIFAL Argentina commented on the importance of capacity building to empower public officials, academic institutions, NGOs, civil society members and private sector leaders to contribute towards the advancement of the SDGs.

At the end of this conference, the 58 attendees, including parliamentarians, private sector representatives and members from the academia expressed their satisfaction with the topics covered.
