7-10 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. UNITAR Executive Director, Mr. Carlos Lopes, held a series of high-level meetings during his visit to Malaysia beginning of June. During his meetings with the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Dato' Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing, Datuk Raja Nong Chik, and Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Y.Bhg.Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad bin Ismail, a number of areas of cooperation between the Malaysian Government and UNITAR has been discussed. The consultations focused on issues of sustainable development and urban management, as well as a UNITAR-affiliated training center jointly managed with the Kuala Lumpur local authorities. Issues related to UNITAR’s work in the area of governance have also been discussed in the framework of the meeting with the leadership of the Malaysian National Institute of Public Administration, and more precisely, INTAN Director Dr. Aminuddin Hassim.

Multilateral diplomacy training is another area where UNITAR’s cooperation with the Malaysian Government has significantly grown over the past period. Among other, Malaysia has become the first contributor to UNITAR’s Fellowship Fund. Mr. Lopes held a series of meetings with the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia, H.E. Ambassador Selwyn Das, and the Director-General of the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations, Dr. Ku Jaafar. UNITAR Executive Director was also invited to deliver a public lecture on “Challenges to Multilateralism” that took place on 8 June in the IDFR premises. More informaiotn on the IDFR website.
