18 October 2023, New York, USA – On 11 October 2023, to foster a deeper understanding of the United Nations’ core functions, the UNITAR New York Office, in collaboration with the Hospitality Committee for UN Delegations, recently organized the Knowledge to Lead Workshops. The Permanent Mission of the Principality of Monaco supported the initiative by hosting the event in their conference room. These workshops were specifically tailored for diplomat’s spouses, and aimed to shed light on the intricacies of the Security Council and the 78th General Assembly Session.

The event commenced with a warm welcome from H.E. Ambassador Isabelle Picco of the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the United Nations. Ambassador Picco’s introductory remarks set the stage for an enlightening day ahead. Following her, Ms. Ashley Bernhard, Founder of Haven Hill, and Chief of Diplomatic Spouse Career Group, shared her remarkable journey collaborating with the United Nations. Her insights illuminated the crucial role of diplomat’s spouses in fostering ties between the UN diplomatic community in New York.

A highlight of the workshop was the keynote address by Ms. Loraine Sievers, Director of Security Council Procedure and Co-author of “The Procedure of the UN Security Council.” Ms. Sievers provided an in-depth look into the workings of the Security Council, offering rare insights from her extensive experience. Her discussion not only covered the Council’s operational dynamics but also delved into her latest work, “The UNwilling Spy,” a fiction suspense novel inspired by her own experiences in the 70s.

Dr. Angel Angelov, Consul General of Bulgaria in New York, and former Deputy Permanent Representative at the Permanent Mission of Bulgaria to the United Nations, shared valuable insights into the role of the Hospitality Committee for UN Delegates. Through an engaging slideshow, he highlighted the General Assembly’s impactful initiatives and drew from his extensive UN career, enriching the audience’s understanding.

The workshops concluded with a stimulating Q&A session moderated by Ms. Bernhard, providing attendees with a unique opportunity to interact directly with the speakers. As the formal sessions ended, guests engaged in networking opportunities, further fostering connections, all while enjoying refreshments. Through knowledge and dialogue, these workshops continue to strengthen the global diplomatic community, fostering cooperation and understanding on an international scale.
