The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) joins with other UN Agencies around the world in expressing its condolences to the people of Japan following the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami which struck on 11 March 2011. We also echo the United Nations Secretary-General’s remarks expressing his condolences to those who have lost family and friends (SG/SM/13437). Through its office in Hiroshima, Japan, UNITAR will be monitoring the situation as it develops.

In addition, the Institute thanks its partners, alumni and participants from around the globe who have sent messages of support and condolence.   UNITAR wishes the very best to the rescue and support teams who have been mobilized in response to this emergency as well as to the Japanese people themselves in both addressing the immediate needs of all affected, as well as in the long road to recovery.
