The year 2010 marks the 10th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on “Women, Peace and Security,” which acknowledged for the first time the important role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts and in peace building, and the importance of their equal participation and full involvement in efforts for the maintenance and promotion of peace and security.   On this occasion, the EU Joint Team in Geneva and the Mission of Belgium organized on 15 and 16 September 2010 an High-level Consultation on “Women, Peace and Security: From Resolution to Action” at the Palais de Nations in Geneva.  The event was coordinated by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, in collaboration with UNITAR Peacekeeping Training Programme and the Women’s international League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).The event brought together representatives from Member States, the EU, UN organizations, and NGOs from humanitarian, human rights and security domains in order to discuss the notion of protection in the framework of Resolution 1325.    The 10th anniversary of Resolution 1325 provided a unique opportunity to discuss at different levels lessons learned from its implementation and shortcomings that still hinder its full execution. The event complemented events held in Brussels and New York focused around the other two pillars of Resolution 1325: participation (Brussels), and prevention (New York).    The final outcome of these events will be a set of recommendations that will constitute the EU contribution to the UN high level Ministerial debate organized by the Security Council in New York in October.
