24 October 2024 - Recognizing the importance of learning and knowledge as key foundations for development, this year six United Nations research and training entities mark UN Day with a renewed call for accelerated action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

20 October 2023, Geneva, Switzerland – To mark its 60th anniversary, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) launched the 'SDG4Kids' initiative, a series of interactive educational experiences linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aimed at engaging Geneva’s young minds to create positive change for a better future.

6 October 2023, Geneva, Switzerland - To mark its 60th anniversary, UNITAR is organizing in Geneva, starting on the 2nd of October, a photo exhibition, displayed on the Rotonde du Quai du Mont-Blanc (across from the Brunswick Monument), will illustrate 60 years of history as well as stories of UNITAR alumni who made a positive change in their community. The alumni featured in the panel exhibition come from Bangladesh, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Kenya, Maldives, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, United Arab Emirates and Vanuatu. The opening ceremony on the 6th of October (4 pm) of the photo exhibition will be attended by Mr. Nikhil Seth, the Executive Director of UNITAR, Ms. Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, H.E. Mr. Raymond Loretan, President of the Diplomatic Club of Geneva, and H.E. Mr. Alfonso Gomez, Mayor of Geneva.

10 August 2023, Port Vila, Vanuatu - Vanuatu faces many threats because of climate change – the most visible of which is sea-level rise. While coastal inundation poses great risks to infrastructure, damage can be mitigated through evidence-based planning geospatial information technologies (GIT). Leveraging GIT with new and innovative technologies like drones can assist decision-makers in targeting their country’s most vulnerable sectors and communities, thereby ensuring future resilience.

20-21 June 2023, Bangkok, Thailand: Natural hazards, climate change, unplanned urban growth, deforestation, environmental degradation, and scarcity of natural resources are hindering the progress of LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS in building resilient cities and communities. The IPCC AR6 report released earlier this year makes clear that the risks of inaction on climate are immense and the way ahead requires change at a scale not seen before. Climate impacts on people and ecosystems are more widespread and severe than expected, and future risks will escalate rapidly with every fraction of a degree of warming.

6 February 2023, Geneva, Switzerland – On Monday 6 February 2023, two major earthquakes struck Türkiye and Syria in the early hours of the day. The UNOSAT Emergency Mapping service is activated.

09 January 2023, Geneva, Switzerland – A series of tailored training was delivered by UNOSAT experts in November and December 2022 in 3 countries of the Pacific: Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Fiji. Building up on past activities, these sessions aimed to enhance GIS capacity for Climate Resilience.
