January 2012, New York, USA –“A wonderful workshop with very good teachers!” This delegate’s observation aptly sums up a successful year for the New York Office: in 2011, it planned, organized and evaluated 39 workshops (with over 70 days of training), trained over 1400 participants from Member States, UN staff and civil society, and secured new strategic partnerships with academia and the private sector. Building on these successes, UNITAR NYO will expand its thematic focus in 2012 and engage new partners.

10 November 2011, New York, United States of America. On 4 November 2011, the New York Office of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations held the second workshop of the series on United Nations Reform.

This forum aims to give diplomats a comprehensive knowledge of the complexities of sustainable development issues and provide them with the necessary tools to participate in the negotiation process. This opening workshop addressed the main themes of the Rio+20 Conference: the institutional framework for sustainable development and a green economy.

21 October 2011, New York, United States of America – The United Nations Institute of Training and Research (UNITAR) organized a two-day workshop on Environmental Negotiations and Climate Change Diplomacy on the 20 and 21 of October at the Office of the Permanent Observer of the African Union to the United Nations, as part of the 2011 Negotiation Series “Towards a level playing field” organized in collaboration with the Olof Palme Memorial Fund.

14 October 2011, New York, United States of America – On 14 October 2011, the UNITAR New York Office, jointly with the Permanent Mission of Switzerland, organized a half-day workshop on “United Nations Reform: Institutional Adaptation of UN Governing Bodies.” The workshop opened UNITAR’s four-part series on UN reform in New York that covers topics such as management reform, system-wide coherence and new approaches to mediation and preventive diplomacy.

The New York Office of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) organized on 1 September a seminar exploring the links between democracy and development, a vast and complex issue where political rhetoric often supplants rational analysis.

Dr. Bachelet, Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), gave the opening speech of the workshop. She encouraged women to speak up, no matter what the situation.
