20 March 2024, Geneva / Bonn - The world’s generation of electronic waste is rising five times faster than documented e-waste recycling, the UN’s fourth Global E-waste Monitor (GEM) reveals today. The 62 million tonnes of e-waste generated in 2022 would fill 1.55 million 40-tonne trucks, roughly enough trucks to form a bumper-tobumper line encircling the equator, according to the report from ITU and UNITAR.

19 March 2024, Derby, United Kingdom - Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2023,  the University of Derby recently hosted the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). The two-day visit started with a presentation on hostage negotiation in Afghanistan, highlighting the role of intergovernmental agencies and local leaders in safeguarding civilians. This was followed by a networking session with MSc Intelligence, Security and Disaster Management students, and staff from across the College of Business, Law and Social Sciences (BLSS).

5 March 2024, Nairobi, Kenya – Twenty-five participants from 24 sub-Saharan African countries will join the third and final phase of the “Developing Essential Digital Skills for Women and Youth in Africa: Enhancing Employment Opportunities and Livelihood Development in the Digital Economy” training programme in Nairobi (6-7 March 2024). Participants will take part in in-person workshops and receive expert insights from industry practitioners.

4 March 2024, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR Division for Prosperity will hold the final session of the “2023 Cycle Women’s Leadership in Tsunami-based Disaster Risk Reduction Training Programme for World Tsunami Awareness Day” from 5 to 11 March 2024 in Nuku’alofa, Tonga. Twenty exceptional learners have been selected from over 200 participants of the programme’s first phase to join the session in Tonga, where they will go on study tours and present what they learned.

22 February 2024, Hiroshima, Japan – Twenty-five women and youth from three sub-Saharan African countries will visit Japan for the third and final phase of the UNITAR training programme “Developing Green Livelihoods for Women and Youth in Africa: Strengthening Food Security, Supporting Climate Resilient Economies”. The participants will visit Tokyo and Hiroshima for an in-person workshop and study tour, from 26 February to March 2024.

This alliance, focusing on academic development and research, underscores a shared dedication to quality education and impactful innovation.



Signed by Mr. Evariste Karambizi of UNITAR and Dr. Caroline Varin of Prowibo, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes a framework for research collaboration and educational resource sharing. Central to this partnership is the emphasis on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 4, SDG 16, and SDG 17, reflecting both organizations' aligned objectives. Key initiatives include joint research projects and the dissemination of findings through Prowibo’s academic journal, Higher Education Compass.
