PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

The Peacekeeping Training Programme Unit (PTPU) is part of UNITAR’s Division for Peace. The Unit contributes to the international community’s efforts towards the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the building of lasting peace. Recognising that peace is a prerequisite for the achievement of the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, PTPU supports the development of capacities in the areas of peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and crisis management. Through innovative and results-oriented approaches, the Programme Unit strengthens knowledge and skills of individuals, groups, and institutions.

Recognising the synergies between goals 5 (Gender equality) and 16 (Just, peaceful and inclusive societies) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and in support to the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda (UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 and subsequent resolutions), PTPU has established a dedicated team focused on the design and implementation of capacity building packages aiming to empower groups of women to meaningfully take part in peace processes, at all levels and in all capacities. Furthermore, the topic of Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) is a cross-cutting priority across the programming of the Division for Peace, following a growing commitment to leaving no one behind in its efforts to build sustainable and inclusive peace in conflict and post-conflict environments. The development of the PTPU’s main activities in relation to GEWE is driven by the understanding that peace implies the establishment, in a broad-based and deep-rooted fashion, of the attitudes, institutions and structures which create and sustain peaceful societies in the long run, and which prevent the occurrence of and/or relapse into all forms of violence.

THEMATIC CONTEXT OF THE TRAINEESHIP

UNITAR is currently rolling-out a series of capacity building offers, in partnership with the FemWise-Africa Secretariat and the International Conference on The Great Lakes Regions - Regional Training Facility (RTF). Through both these partnerships, UNITAR will help enhance institutional capacity to deliver trainings and sensitization activities which contribute to the creation of a more equal and inclusive future – where we see a greater representation of women involved in mediation and conflict prevention as well as a more integrated response to sexual and gender-based violence.  Please note that the primary language of instruction for these projects will be French and English.
