Legislative Development and Infrastructure Building
Many countries that are developing National Implementation Plans have identified the development and/or amendment of their national legislation as a priority in order to meet the requirements of the Stockholm Convention. Similarly, enforcement of such legislation, including training needs for those responsible for enforcement, have also been identified as priorities. Upon request, and resources permitting, UNITAR, in cooperation with GEF Implementing Agencies and other partners, assists countries to address legislation-related issues and associated infrastructure building/strengthening.
UNEP Project: UNITAR is cooperating with UNEP on a GEF Medium-Sized Project, currently under development, aimed at assisting Parties to the Convention with developing the necessary legislative environment to implement the Convention.
Ghana: As part of the GEF project, “Ghana: Capacity Building for PCB Elimination” and "PCB Management in Ghana, from Capacity Building to Elimination", UNITAR is assisting with Ghana with legislative development and infrastructure building. For further information on this project, click here.
Armenia: As a follow-up to priorities identified through Armenia’s participation in the UNITAR project, Development of an Integrated National Programme as well as the preparation of its National Implementation Plan for the Stockholm Convention, UNITAR is assisting Armenia with a GEF Medium-Sized Project, with co-financing provided by the Government of Switzerland. The project will focus on capacity building activities aimed both at implementing the Stockholm Convention, and implementing other chemicals/waste management priorities that are being identified as part of a Swiss-supported UNITAR project on Integrated Chemicals and Waste Management. The project is currently in the PDF-A phase.
